‘Сouldn’t understand why’ – Everton manager Sean Dyche asks Harry Kane question

Sean Dyche expressed his confusion over Harry Kane’s decision to engage in an after-the-whistle challenge that led to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s dismissal, writes the LiverpoolEcho.

The midfielder walked off the pitch immediately after the referee, David Coote, promptly gave him a red card for shoving Kane in the face. While many have focused on Kane’s theatrics, Dyche questioned the incident that triggered the major altercation during Everton’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

In the lead-up to the incident that led to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s red card, referee David Coote had already blown for a free-kick for Everton on the halfway line. Harry Kane, who had been winning a string of soft free-kicks, knocked over Demarai Gray in front of the technical areas before stepping over him and challenging Doucoure for the loose ball. As both players moved away from each other, Doucoure pushed Kane in the face, prompting the red card.

This means that Doucoure will miss the next three matches, which will be a significant blow to Sean Dyche’s team. Dyche agreed that the red card was justified, as was the penalty that followed when Michael Keane brought down Cristian Romero, leading to Kane’s successful spot-kick. However, he remained puzzled by how the incident had escalated from a seemingly minor situation.

Dyche said: “The penalty is a penalty. They are tough for centre halves because he has only flicked a toe at it. The lad is not going to get the ball, they knock it and they go down. But I’m not quarrelling, that’s modern football for you.

“And the sending off, all I will say is that you can’t raise your hands. It’s as simple as that. I couldn’t understand why Harry went for the challenge because the referee had blown the whistle for [the foul on] Dimi Gray.

“So it ends up making a moment out of something that wouldn’t have been a moment. But Douc has to respond to that as well and he does raise his hand, so the actual outcome – that’s the way it goes, you know you can’t do that.”
