England hammered Iran 6-2 this afternoon over in Qatar although Jordan Pickford will have been disappointed to concede two goals, writes the TBR.
The Everton goalkeeper couldn’t do anything about the first Iran goal and then was unlucky to see a penalty awarded late on as well. Pickford could do little about that penalty, and it put a bit of a dampener on what was a superb performance from England.
However, Pickford did actually play his part in keeping the score down as well. Despite having a quiet game, he made a fine save in the Sardar Azmoun with the game 6-1. And commenting on the incident for the BBC, former England goalkeeper Rob Green was seriously impressed.
“That is a fantastic save, Pickford waited and waited and as he goes down, he keeps his trailing arm above to make contact and it is a great save,” Green said on BBC comms.
Pickford will be happy enough with a quiet afternoon at the office. Like all goalkeepers, though, he won’t be happy at conceding two in the opening game. And for England, it’s something they’ll need to tighten up on.
