The World Cup has put a number of Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer targets in the spotlight, writes the TBR.
A report from journalist Paul Brown, via Give Me Sport, suggest Spurs will now face plenty of competition for Crotian defender Josko Gvardiol.
Gvardiol is one of the most highly-rated young defenders in the world right now.
Since making his professional debut as a 17-year-old at Dinamo Zagreb, his career has gone from strength to strength.
The 20-year-old is already appearing at his second major international tournament after bursting onto the scene at last year’s European Championships.
He’s also earned a move to RB Leipzig, although the German side look set to lose him in the near future.
Gvardiol is now attracting interest from some of the world’s biggest club, however Tottenham are still considering signing him.
Manchester City made a massive bid for Gvardiol in the summer, but RB Leipzig held onto one of their most prized assets.
Chelsea are another side with an interest in signing Gvardiol, and have the resources to match his £75m asking price.
If Tottenham are still considering signing Gvardiol, they may need to move quickly in January to beat their rivals to the punch.
It could be a massive signal of intent if Antonio Conte’s side could sign the young Croatian.
However, their Premier League rivals are unlikely to make it easy for them to get a deal over the line.
Speaking to Give Me Sport, journalist Paul Brown said: “He’s definitely on Tottenham’s list. The trouble is, he’s on the list of about four or five other very big clubs who are all Champions League regulars.
“I think this one is really going to depend on who makes the first move, whether that’s in January or in the summer.
“I would expect to see a bidding war, depending on how big the first bid that goes in is.”
Gvardiol is the sort of defender Tottenham could build their team around for years to come.
