Troy Deeney feels France will be wrong to overlook Harry Kane as England’s biggest threat. Even though he adds the Tottenham Hotspur striker has been ‘nullified’ at the World Cup, writes the HITC.
Kane has scored once over four appearances at Qatar 2022 ahead of captaining the Three Lions against Les Bleus. Gareth Southgate’s side take on Didier Deschamps’ reigning title-holders in the quarter-finals at Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday, December 10 at 19:00 GMT.
Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford have fired England through to the last eight in Qatar so far on three goals each. The wingers are Southgate’s only players to score more than Kane Jack Grealish, Jordan Henderson, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling’s one.
Yet despite struggling to finish their attacks, Kane is England’s lead creator ahead of facing France with three assists. Only Foden with two has also created more than one Three Lions goal thus far in Qatar. The Manchester City ace offered both against Senegal in the last 16.
Kane laid on two assists in England’s opening 6-2 win against Iran after finding Sterling and Rashford. The £200k-a-week Tottenham striker added his third and most recent effort with a ball across the box for Foden to score in the Three Lions’ 3-0 Group B win against Wales.
Kane added a goal to his tally in the Round of 16 as England beat Senegal 3-0 from Foden’s assist. The Manchester City ace laid the ball on to the forward following Bellingham’s work to drive the Three Lions on. Kane produced a well-taken finish to fire past Edouard Mendy.
So, Deeney now believes France would be wrong to overlook Kane as England’s most lethal threat at the World Cup. But the Tottenham forward has not entirely convinced the former Watford star, who adds the Three Lions captain is not their only weapon against Les Bleus.
“France will want to stop Harry Kane from dominating at the other end,” Deeney wrote in a column for The Sun. “They are on a different planet if they don’t see Kane as the biggest threat on the pitch for England.
“He has been nullified pretty well in this tournament so far and they will want to keep that going. But like France are not just [Kylian] Mbappe with the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann, England are not just Kane.”
