Report: West Ham star now has hamstring issues as well as illness

David Moyes faces a fresh defensive injury blow with West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd suffering both a hamstring issue and a bout of illness at the World Cup, according to GFFN, writes the WestHamZone.

The Hammers are indeed strapped in defence ahead of the Premier League return on Boxing Day, with Angelo Ogbonna out with a long-term injury and Kurt Zouma facing a long-injury spell too.

Now, summer signing Aguerd, who is impressing at the World Cup, could well be amongst that list according to latest developments.

Morocco became the first African nation in FIFA World Cup history to reach the semi-finals against Portugal last weekend but did so without the West Ham man who picked up a hamstring issue against Spain in their round-of-16 success.

Latest reports state that Aguerd is also suffering from “flu-like symptoms” as well as his hamstring injury, which means he could well be out until after the New Year.

The Aguerd development comes as a big blow to Moyes, seeing as he only has two fit central defenders to call upon when the Premier League resumes on Boxing Day.

Thilo Kehrer returned from Qatar with Germany unscathed and could now fill in at centre-back along with Craig Dawson who remains fit and fresh, but considering the stunning form Aguerd has shown at the World Cup for his country, he could well have been a quality addition in Moyes’ backline upon his return.

How they will have needed him to continue that form in Qatar over into the festive period.

The Hammers have undergone a poor Premier League campaign so far, sitting one point and two places above the relegation spots from 15 games and Moyes will desperately need his best players in top condition upon the league resumption.

This latest injury worry means West Ham United may now be forced into the January transfer market for a new centre-back, with all eyes on the London Stadium.
