‘Open to offers’ – Tottenham want to sell £65k-a-week player who started against Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur will know how important a good January transfer window is for the rest of their season, writes the TBR.

Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas provided updates on a number of Tottenham incomings and outgoings.

Half of Tottenham’s squad were in Qatar for the World Cup last month, and they’ve struggled to hit the ground running since returning to north London.

A laboured draw with Brentford was a reminder of their pre-World Cup form.

Their performance against Aston Villa on New Year’s Day was even worse and showed that work needed to be done quickly.

One position that has been widely talked about at Spurs in right wing-back. Conte currently has three options to choose from in Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty and Djed Spence.

However, Tottenham have been linked with a number of potential replacements.

Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries and Sporting defender Pedro Porro have both piqued Conte’s interest.

At least one player may need to be brought in this week, as Thomas suggests that Tottenham could sell Doherty soon.

The club are reportedly happy to let the £65,000-a-week defender go if the right offer comes in.

Speaking to Last Word on Spurs, Thomas said: “There would be open to offers for Matt. They were open to offers in the summer.

“He has not quite done it at Tottenham, I don’t think he has hit the potential that they thought they would.

“It is definitely an area of concern for Conte, because he doesn’t seem to be able to settle on a player who he prefers in that position.”

Doherty didn’t cover himself in glory against Brentford, and failed to win a penalty for a suspicious dive in the home side’s box.
