Lucas Paqueta has shared with the club’s official website what many of the Lyon players were saying about West Ham after facing the Hammers at the London Stadium last season.
Paqueta is still in the early stages of his Irons career following his club-record move in the summer. The early signs have whetted the appetite for what is to come from the Brazilian.
The 25-year-old recently opened up on how Bruno Guimaraes praised West Ham ahead of his London Stadium switch. But Paqueta had his own experience of the Hammers before his move.
West Ham fans will not forget their Europa League quarter-final tie with Lyon in a hurry. David Moyes’ men won the second-leg 3-0 in France after a controversial 1-1 draw which will largely be remembered for Moussa Dembele winking after winning the free-kick which saw Aaron Cresswell sent off.
But it seems that that game had an impact on Paqueta when West Ham came calling in the summer.
“After we played West Ham in the Europa League last season, we all said as players what a fantastic stadium it was and how great the fans were and what great energy there was in the place,” he told the club’s official website.
“That’s definitely something that influenced my decision as well. Without a doubt, it’s an incredible club and something that I wanted to experience.”
West Ham have definitely elevated themselves to another level since Moyes’ second spell in charge started. They are now a team looking to put themselves in Europe on a consistent basis.
And while it is going to be a huge task to permanently put themselves amongst the Premier League heavyweights, being able to sign players of Paqueta’s calibre will only help.
He looks to have the ability to be a game-changing signing for the Hammers.
And that may well have an impact further down the line when other potential targets get the opportunity to take on West Ham at the London Stadium.
