The Liverpool Echo journalist Joe Thomas has praised the performance of Everton attacker Dwight McNeil in their match at Southampton in the Premier League this afternoon, writes the FTT.
The 22-year-old scored his first goal in a blue shirt since arriving at Goodison Park from Burnley in the summer transfer window.
It came during a crazy 10 minutes at the start of the second half, when Joe Aribo had given the hosts the lead before Conor Coady and then McNeil put the visitors 2-1 up at St Mary’s.
Taking to Twitter after the winger was substituted off for Anthony Gordon in the second half, Thomas hailed McNeil’s performance, even going as far as to claim that it was his best one for his new club so far.
The journalist tweeted: “Anthony Gordon comes on for Dwight McNeil. That was McNeil’s best performance for Everton by far. Busy in the first half as he grew into the game, his goal was a screamer – and he should also have an assist after that through ball to Demarai Gray.”
McNeil will be relieved to get off the mark for Frank Lampard’s side, and he turned out to be the match-winner for Everton today.
Aside from his goal, he won four of his duels against Southampton, while he also recorded one successful dribble, two tackles and one interception, in addition to creating two big chances for his team-mates (SofaScore).
Having not scored or created a goal in his previous eight appearances for the Toffees, it is hard to argue that this was McNeil’s best game for the club so far, and he will now be hoping to really kick on from this performance.
