‘A wee bit fortunate’ – David Moyes gives verdict on West Ham’s Gianluca Scamacca

David Moyes, the manager of West Ham United, has given an explanation as to why he substituted Gianluca Scamacca early in the second half of their 4-0 victory over AEK Larnaca in the Europa Conference League round of 16 second leg, writes the football.london.

Scamacca, who had not started a match in over two months, scored the first goal of the game after 20 minutes with a toed finish to the end of a solo run, putting West Ham ahead 1-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate. However, after a quick-fire brace from Jarrod Bowen, Moyes made a triple substitution on 54 minutes, which included taking off Scamacca, due to his recent low levels of “physical data.”

David Moyes, the West Ham United manager, has explained his decision to substitute Gianluca Scamacca early in the second half of their 4-0 Europa Conference League round of 16 second leg win against AEK Larnaca. Scamacca, who had been out of the starting lineup for over two months, scored the opening goal of the match with a toed finish to the end of a solo run, putting West Ham ahead 1-0 on the night and three goals clear on aggregate.

Moyes made a triple substitution on 54 minutes, taking off Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta, and Scamacca, citing the player’s low levels of “physical data” in recent comments. Moyes said that his initial plan was to play Scamacca for an hour, but he decided to take him off at the same time as Bowen and Paqueta, giving himself more opportunities to pause the game and make substitutions, should he need to.

Moyes felt that Scamacca’s performance had positives other than his goal and hopes that his runout of over 45 minutes and his ninth goal of the season will help him rediscover his best form.

David Moyes said (via football.london): “He did okay, was a wee bit fortunate with the goal but strikers need their goals to gain confidence. I’m pleased for him, he’s a really good lad and done a lot of good things tonight so hopefully, it will help bring him on.”
