Chelsea star defender will hold talks next week about his future, issue needs revisiting with new owners

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta will reportedly sit down for talks about his future after Sunday, writes the Chelsea Chronicle.

According to The Telegraph, the Spain international is scheduled for talks with Chelsea next week after his country wrap up the international break with a match against Czech Republic tomorrow.

It is understood the 32-year-old was under the impression the Blues would grant him an exit this summer after a decade of service, albeit he’s still got 12 months left on his deal at Stamford Bridge. Barcelona are waiting in the wings to sign him but don’t want to pay a transfer fee.

The report explains that issue now needs revisiting because of the change of ownership.

Apparently, Azpilicueta had it in his mind he would be drawing the curtains on his Chelsea career at the end of the season. His future still remains in doubt heading into these imminent talks, though.

Many will argue the £150,000-a-week defender should be allowed to leave on his terms due to what he’s achieved and given the club for the last 10 years.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel recently confirmed he would like to convince ‘Azpi’ to stay another season at the club, but he’s not too sure on what the outcome will be of future discussions.

The fact he’s still an important Spain international shows just how professional he is as he approaches his 33rd birthday.

For certain, Azpilicueta would leave a huge hole behind in the Blues squad if he exits for Barcelona this summer. His versatility and consistency as either a centre-back or wing-back makes him a manager’s dream to have in the squad.

It’s going to be interesting the dialogue between Chelsea’s defender and the new ownership about his future, especially because two senior defenders in Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are already leaving this summer.
