‘Difficult personality…’ – Italian football expert shares Tottenham concerns over naming 48-year-old as new manager

Speaking to ESPN FC (h/t Express), Italian football expert Gabriele Marcotti has revealed that Tottenham have reservations about naming Paulo Fonseca as the next manager of the club, writes ToTheLaneAndBack.

Tottenham are yet to make an appointment for the managerial role despite having sacked Jose Mourinho well over a month ago now. Several names have been constantly linked but the club hasn’t been able to close a deal. Antonio Conte was the latest candidate to be linked, only for the club to end the interest in the Italian due to his demands. (h/t Express)

Now, the name of Paulo Fonseca has come up as the potential next manager of Tottenham. The Portuguese tactician is out of a job after being replaced by Mourinho at AS Roma at the end of the 2020/21 season.

However, Marcotti has revealed that there are concerns within the Tottenham camp over appointing back-to-back Portuguese managers, potentially ruling out the 48-year-old from the managerial race. (h/t Express)

“I think Fonseca would be an interesting candidate. But when I raised that I was told things like ‘well they’re not sure about having two Portuguese managers in a row’, as if of course all Portuguese managers are identical and Fonseca is a little Jose Mourinho clone – which of course he is not.

“He is very different in terms of personality and approach. Maybe he’s a fit, maybe he’s not. But what I do know is they’re going to have to get cracking on this because you can only carry this forward for so long. In the next couple of weeks, things have to come together I think.”

Not wanting to appoint back-to-back Portuguese managers does come out as a bizarre reason. Irrespective of that, Fonseca might not be the best man for the job. While he did do some good work at Shakhtar Donetsk previously and Roma, the last season was a difficult one for the Giallorossi. And a job as big as the one at Tottenham could be too much to handle for the 48-year-old.
