Jeff Stelling moots Everton move for record-breaking forward live on Sky Sports

Jeff Stelling believes Everton could make a move for Brentford centre-forward Ivan Toney, but Paul Merson has expressed doubts.

Toney, 25, will line up against Everton this weekend as the Bees host the Blues at the Brentford Community Stadium on Sunday.

Discussing the possibility of Brighton signing the Englishman on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, [27/11/21] Stelling suggested a switch to Merseyside could be on the cards for the man who broke the Championship goalscoring record last season.

“Can I just suggest that there might be bigger clubs interested in Toney, an Everton for example,” he said.

Merson replied: “Who’s above Everton at the moment? Oh yeah [Brighton].”

Stelling: “But Everton are a bigger club than Brighton.”

Merson: “They are a bigger club but it’s changing now.

“I think Brighton suits Toney more than Everton, he’s one of these players that comes short, he can get the ball, he can stay up front.

“If Everton come in for him and Dominic Calvert-Lewin gets fit and you’ve got Richarlison, does he play? I don’t think he does and I don’t think Everton have got that much money to start buying players to sit on the bench.”

DCL replacement?

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been crucial for Everton over the last few years, with the 24-year-old scoring 32 Premier League goals since the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

Such form saw him earn a call-up to the England squad for the summer European Championship, and he is now regarded as one of the finest centre-forwards in the county.

That’s likely to have alerted a host of elite-level clubs, with Calvert-Lewin constantly linked with a Goodison Park exit.

There is no suggestion that he is seeking a move away at the moment, but he can’t be happy looking at the current state of the side while he sits out injured.

The ex-Sheffield United man must have aspirations of playing in Europe, specifically the Champions League, and that looks an absolute mile away at the moment.

Most Everton supporters will be desperate to keep hold of him, but the reality is that an exit cannot be ruled out the way things are going.

Toney would represent a decent replacement, someone who can perform a similar role to that of Calvert-Lewin, but the latter’s aerial threat is unmatched in the Premier League and he would be a huge loss, one that cannot be replaced by the Brentford star.
