‘Embarrassing performance’ – Jarrod Bowen slams ‘criminal’ West Ham defending

After a crushing 5-1 defeat to Newcastle, West Ham player Jarrod Bowen did not mince his words when he spoke out about the team’s performance, writes the Evening Standard.

Bowen described the display as “embarrassing”, blaming the team’s “criminal” defending for their defeat. West Ham had hoped for a win that would have seen them climb to 12th place in the league, but were unable to stop Eddie Howe’s side, who are pushing for Champions League qualification.

The Hammers made several individual errors, allowing Callum Wilson and Joelinton to score two goals each. Although the defeat leaves West Ham outside the relegation zone on goal difference, Bowen said there was “nothing positive to take out of it”.

“It’s an embarrassing performance at the end of the day, there’s nothing positive to take out of it,” a furious Bowen said.

“It was a massive game coming off [beating Southampton on] Sunday, so it is disappointing. We’ve got to feel that it hurts, we have another game on Saturday [at Fulham], so we have to turn hurt into joy. It’s too late in the season to brush things under the carpet. We are in this position and have to face it head on.”

Despite Kurt Zouma’s goal bringing them back into the game, West Ham United ultimately suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Newcastle United. The Hammers conceded two early goals but managed to fight back, only for a mistake by Nayef Aguerd to give Newcastle their third goal just after half-time. The situation worsened when substitute Alexander Isak took advantage of another mistake from goalkeeper Lukas Fabianski, followed by Joelinton scoring a fifth goal in the 90th minute. The result has raised questions about David Moyes’s future.
