Everton have made an approach to sign Cagliari centre-forward Giovanni Simeone on loan, according to online news outlet TEAMtalk.
Simeone, 26, is currently out on loan at Hellas Verona, scoring 12 goals in his first 15 Serie A appearances – only Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic (15) and Lazio’s Ciro Immobile (13) have scored more so far this season.
His form has led Premier League duo Everton and West Ham to scout the Argentinian, with both clubs enquiring after a loan deal for the Madrid-born striker who has five caps for Argentina.
However, a sticking point has emerged – Simeone has already played for two clubs this season, making a brief substitute appearance for parent club Cagliari against Spezia (23 August).
TEAMtalk claim Simeone’s “people” have already tried to appeal the decision but have been left in no uncertain terms that players cannot feature for more than two clubs in a single season, no matter how brief the appearance was.
Salomon Rondon scored in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Crystal Palace on Sunday (12 December), but that was his first in an Everton shirt as he failed to fire in his first 11 appearances.
Richarlison, meanwhile, has only scored three goals in 11 games.
That’s not enough from players at the top of the pitch.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck in each of his first three appearances this campaign but has not been seen since August due to injury.
He’s due to return in the coming weeks but Everton cannot rely on him remaining fit all season and, unless Rondon’s goal in South London is about to spark a goal rush, signing a new centre-forward would make a lot of sense, especially on loan, given the club’s apparent financial woes.
But, if they really have made an approach to sign Simeone on loan, it’s another show of incompetence by the Blues board – those in charge of recruitment should have been firmly aware of the rules and done their due diligence.
