Fabrizio Romano explained why Chelsea lost out to Tottenham in pursuit of eight-goal winger

Inter Milan star Ivan Perisic has agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer despite Chelsea’s early interest in the versatile winger, according to Fabrizio Romano, write the Chelsea Chronicle.

The versatile winger is reportedly set to sign a two-year deal with Spurs after turning down a contract extension from Inter.

Romano claims that Chelsea were interested but technically were never in the race for Perisic, who had eight goals and seven assists in Serie A this season.

The Blues’ pursuit of the Croatia international was “neutered” by the restrictions on offering new contracts and signing new players of the special licence under which the club has operated in the last few months.

Perisic worked together with Conte during Inter’s title-winning season in 2020/21, and the Italian manager reportedly personally called the player to convince him to join Spurs.

Fortunately for Chelsea, this would hardly impact their summer plans.

Ben Chilwell was always going to be the first-choice left wing-back option, and Thomas Tuchel will have plenty of other options for cover.

Marcos Alonso is reportedly keen on leaving the club this summer amid links with Barcelona, but Emerson Palmieri and Ian Maatsen will soon return to the club from their loan spells at Lyon and Coventry City, respectively.

Chelsea could also look for other solutions in the transfer market.

Brighton’s Marc Cucurella is one of the names reportedly monitored by the Blues, although his reported £45million price tag could prove problematic.
