First attempt failed: Tottenham superstar rejects mega-money new contract

Hugo Lloris has rejected early attempts by Tottenham to tie him to a new contract, Football Insider understands.

This site revealed last summer that Spurs had opened preliminary talks with their long-serving skipper about a new deal.

A Spurs source has told Football Insider that the club have made a very lucrative contract offer to Lloris but he has rejected it amid growing doubts over his long-term future.

The London giants are set for further talks with the 34-year-old as he has entered the final 18 months of his contract and they do not want him to reach the last year with no agreement.

Tottenham are keen to tie the France World Cup winner to a long-term deal that would see him effectively play the rest of his career at the club.

But the club are braced for strong interest from Paris Saint-Germain in the keeper now that Mauricio Pochettino has been appointed by their new manager.

As Football Insider revealed on Wednesday, Pochettino and the Frenchman “lunched with one another every day” while together at Spurs and had a relationship far closer than that of a player and a manager.

At Tottenham, Jose Mourinho and the Spurs hierarchy still have great faith in Lloris, who is one of their top earners on more than £100,000-a-week.

He has started all 16 of their Premier League matches this season and has looked back to his best after criticism from supporters for a series of high-profile errors in previous seasons.

Lloris has made 346 appearances for Tottenham since signing from Lyon for £11m in 2012.

He is also the captain of the France national team and has won 117 caps for his country.
