Former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor has made a bold claim, suggesting that Everton winger Dwight McNeil could have played for Barcelona or Real Madrid if not for one missing attribute—pace.
McNeil, 24, became the star of the show at Goodison Park on Saturday, September 28, scoring both goals in Everton’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace. The brace marked Everton’s first Premier League win of the season, and McNeil’s standout performance has drawn widespread praise.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor included McNeil in his Team of the Week, highlighting the winger’s technical abilities while expressing admiration for his left foot. “If he had pace, McNeil I think he’d be playing at Real Madrid or Barcelona because his left foot is a wand,” Agbonlahor remarked. “He can find a pass, he can strike a ball. That first goal is becoming a trademark for him. Give him time, and he’ll hit the top corner.”
Despite Agbonlahor’s lofty comparisons, he also acknowledged that McNeil’s lack of speed might keep him from reaching those elite heights, but he reiterated the winger’s value to Everton. “He’s a real special player,” Agbonlahor added. “He always hits the target, and he’s a player any manager would love to have.”
