Gareth Southgate provides update on Harry Kane fitness ahead of third England game

Gareth Southgate has suggested Harry Kane’s fitness problems are behind him but was unclear when asked if the England captain will start against Denmark on Wednesday.

Kane was rested for last week’s 3-0 friendly win over Wales, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Danny Ings both stepping in and scoring in the Tottenham striker’s absence.

Southgate revealed Kane had been suffering from “muscle fatigue” before Sunday’s UEFA Nations League clash with Belgium, so the 27-year-old began the 2-1 victory on the bench before coming on midway through the second half.

And having built fitness from that cameo, Kane could now feature in the final game of the current international break according to Southgate, though whether he will play from the beginning remains a mystery.

“We’re hoping that Harry, that progression tonight, I think he’ll get more confidence from that so we’ll have to assess both him and Jordan [Henderson],” Southgate said after Sunday’s win (via ESPN).

“But certainly Harry should be able to play more minutes [against Denmark].”

Many Spurs fans – and Jose Mourinho – will be anxious if Kane starts on Wednesday given the fact he has already played an unprecedented number of minutes this season.

Tottenham’s ludicrously busy schedule has been problematic, with Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso both sustaining muscle injuries. Hopefully Kane won’t be the next victim.
