Football pundit Gary Lineker has expressed his sympathy for Everton fans following their team’s 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday, 14 September. The Toffees squandered a two-goal lead for the second consecutive match, extending their winless start to the Premier League season to four games.
Speaking on the podcast The Rest Is Football on 16 September, Lineker acknowledged the disappointment of Everton supporters who had traveled to Villa Park. “Everton once again, I felt for their fans yesterday,” he said. “They looked distraught in the stadium. Two consecutive games going two up and losing 3-2.”
Despite the heartache for the fans, Lineker noted that the loss to Villa was less painful than their recent collapse against Bournemouth. “I mean, it wasn’t quite as traumatic as the Bournemouth game,” he said. “You always suspected in that game that Villa were on top for most of it. You always suspected that they might come back, but boy oh boy that must hurt.”
Everton’s poor start to the season under manager Sean Dyche has left the club in a difficult position, as they struggle to find their first win of the campaign.
