‘Getting absolutely hammered’ – Sean Dyche shuts down lazy Newcastle myth

After losing 4-1 to Newcastle United, Sean Dyche tried to motivate his squad by pointing out the Magpies’ players’ transformations under Eddie Howe’s management, writes the ChronicleLive.

Callum Wilson, Joelinton, and Jacob Murphy scored for Newcastle to secure a place in the top four at Goodison Park. Despite some notable new signings such as Alexander Isak, who played a key role in Murphy’s goal, the progress cannot be attributed solely to the transfer market. In fact, half of the players who played on Thursday night were already at the club when Howe took charge of a relegation-threatened side in November 2021. Players such as Fabian Schar, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock, Joelinton, Miguel Almiron, and Jacob Murphy have all improved under the head coach, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by Dyche.

The Everton manager referred to his observations of Newcastle’s previous relegation battles and how he noticed the team’s strong bond. However, he noted that they are now in a more comfortable position as they are currently in third place. He aims to use this as a motivating factor to inspire his own team to avoid relegation. He further added that he provided a message to his players about how some of Newcastle’s players were previously criticized by their own fans but have now improved and are no longer receiving negative feedback.

“I just gave them a little note there,” he told reporters. “There were five or six of their players getting absolutely hammered off their fans a year ago and now they’re not.

“They have earned the right and they have done that through hard work, intent, doing the hard yards. I said to the players, ‘That’s the journey we’re on but we have to fast track it very quickly.'”
