Some of Chelsea’s first team squad have taken to Instagram to react to the news that Saul Niguez’s time at the club has come to an end, write the Chelsea Chronicle.
The midfielder announced his departure on social media, as he addressed supporters and teammates following his season long loan at the club.
The Spaniard made 23 appearances for the Blues across five different competitions, with him never truly breaking into the starting XI.
After an underwhelming debut against Aston Villa, Saul looked slow to adapt to the intensity of Premier League football, seeing the majority of his starts come in cup competitions.
The Spain international took to Twitter and Instagram to outline his struggles in completing his first season of football outside of his native country.
Despite any on the pitch struggles, it appears the 27-year-olds relationship with his teammates remained strong, as many replied to the post with positive things to say.
Forward Christian Pulisic said: “Gonna miss you Hermano”, while 22-year-old Reece James said: “My Spanish brother, love you always.”
Other stars such as Mason Mount, Thiago Silva and Trevor Chalobah all showed their support on Instagram, as the Blues elected not to trigger Saul’s £30m buy option.
Thomas Tuchel had been unsure all season on whether to make the Spaniard’s stay in London permanent, with priorities seemingly on other positions in the transfer market.
Saul’s time at Stamford Bridge will likely not be memorable, however it’s important not to forget the job he did playing in the unfamiliar role of wing-back.
With Ben Chilwell’s season-ending injury, Marcos Alonso was the club’s only recognised fit left wing-back, leaving him desperate for a deputy when necessary.
Despite not ever occupying the role for parent club Atletico Madrid, he occasionally held the position for the Blues when necessary, playing some of his best stuff while combining with the winger in front of him.
