‘He went through a very shaky period’ – Mark Schwarzer says Everton 29-year-old back to his very best

Jordan Pickford, Everton and England’s goalkeeper, has received praise from former Premier League goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer for his impressive performances this season, writes the HITC.

Schwarzer acknowledges that there were doubts about Pickford’s abilities in the past, but believes that those concerns have been put to rest as Pickford is back to his best form. Alongside fellow England goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope, Pickford has been performing exceptionally well for his club this season.

Despite being Southgate’s first choice for the goalkeeper position at major tournaments since 2018, Pickford faces strong competition from Ramsdale and Pope heading into Euro 2024. Schwarzer expressed his admiration for the 29-year-old Everton player during an appearance on Sky Sports News’ Football Show.

Schwarzer said: “I think the three England goalkeepers, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope, I think all three have performed well this season,”

“I think Jordan Pickford is getting back to his very best form. He went through a very shaky period of about 18 months. Then there were a lot of question marks as to whether he was England’s number one. I think he has reaffirmed that.

“The fact that he goes into the England side and never makes a mistake is, for Gareth Southgate, enough. He has proven in the past that he is prepared to stick by that. I think there is a really healthy competition for places.”
