Jermaine Pennant Takes Aim at Kalvin Phillips in New Rant Live on Talksport

Jermaine Pennant expressed his strong opinion that Ross Barkley deserves a place in the upcoming England squad, suggesting he should replace either Kalvin Phillips or Jordan Henderson. Pennant specifically targeted West Ham midfielder Phillips in his critique.

Pennant, who has been closely following Barkley’s performances since his move to Luton in the summer, argued that the midfielder has outperformed both Phillips and Henderson. With Gareth Southgate poised to announce the next England squad on 7 March for the upcoming friendly matches against Belgium and Brazil in preparation for the European Championships, Pennant made a passionate plea for Barkley’s inclusion.

During the live on-air rant, Pennant stated, “I don’t want to see Henderson there, I don’t want to see Phillips. We know what they are. I’d rather see [Declan] Rice, Barkley, and [Jude] Bellingham.”

Highlighting the friendly nature of the upcoming matches, Pennant emphasized the opportunity for Barkley to prove his worth. “It’s a friendly, if he [Barkley] comes on and produces the goods… they like that little defensive holding midfielder, and I think he’s the best one out of what we’ve been seeing so far,” Pennant added.

The former Liverpool man continued to praise Barkley’s contributions at Luton, asserting, “He’s been amazing for Luton, better than Henderson, better than Phillips. Rice, Barkley, Bellingham.”
