Jose Mourinho was very happy with Tanguy Ndombele’s latest performance and has given an update on the fitness of new signing Sergio Reguilon.
Spurs won 3-1 at Shkendija in North Macedonia in the Europa League third qualifying round on Thursday night and Ndombele was one of the standout players.
The 23-year-old Frenchman played a full 90 minutes for the first time in 2020 and only his second under Mourinho.
After a tough first season for the club record signing, he has been impressing the head coach and his staff with his attitude since returning for this campaign and Mourinho was pleased with his efforts on Thursday night.
“He played very well,” said the Spurs boss. “Of course in a game where I can imagine our percentage of ball possession was very, very high and our percentage is high he feels obviously much more comfortable.
“However, even without the ball he had recovery, he had duels, he had defensive transition. It was a really positive game from Tanguy, really happy.
“Can be play Sunday [against Newcastle]? I’m not sure. It’s the first time he played 90 minutes, we have to see how he reacts and recovers from it.
“We have so many matches coming though that if a player is not able to play the next match he will be able to play the next one, and we need that because the matches are coming very fast.”
Mourinho was also asked about the fitness of new signings Reguilon and Gareth Bale and whether he expects more new additions to follow the five Spurs have already signed up.
“Sergio will train with us on Friday. The information I got today from the people that stayed behind was that he had a complete session today and Friday he joins the group,” he said.
“Maybe not match fit but not injured any more and ready to train with the team. Gareth will take a little bit longer so of course no chance for the weekend.
