Jamie O’Hara claims Romelu Lukaku has lost all confidence this season during his time as a Chelsea player, writes the CC.
The underwhelming 2021/22 campaign from Lukaku on his return to Stamford Bridge has been one of the major talking points around the club, barring the obvious takeover story.
His £97.5million signing from Inter Milan last summer is now looking quite an expensive mistake just a year on.
He did end up with 15 goals across all competitions last season, but didn’t find a comfortable role where he looked settled as the Chelsea No.9.
It’s why the Belgian frontman is being linked with a transfer exit in this window. For example, latest reports suggest talks continue to happen between Chelsea and Inter Milan over a possible loan deal for Lukaku.
TalkSPORT pundit O’Hara reckons Chelsea’s forward definitely suffered a big loss of confidence.
In addition, he pointed towards a lack of a relationship with his manager Thomas Tuchel as a key factor in his last nine months.`
“His performances weren’t really good enough. It looks like he’s lost his confidence,” O’Hara told talkSPORT.
“I think Lukaku is one of those players who needs to have an arm around him by the manager to really give him that belief. Thomas Tuchel didn’t give him that.
“It’s been an absolute disaster of a signing. I thought he was going to be the final piece in the jigsaw.”
It may be normal to worry when your manager can’t quite get a tune out of a near-£100million player.
However, Tuchel deserves the benefit of the doubt down to the fact Lukaku’s had a history of not fitting in at every club.
Overall, Chelsea’s manager has proven to be a master at work that deserves the support of everyone.
The real judgement of Tuchel should only begin once he’s been given the licence to really build the XI how he likes with a few more of his signings.
