“On one condition” – Chelsea will buy a midfielder for £30m next summer

Chelsea have plans to sign Saul Niguez permanently at the end of the season, as long as his performances justify it, writes the Chelsea Chronicle.

The Evening Standard claims the Blues will offer Saul a full-time contract next summer – if he contributes enough to Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

The Spaniard swapped sunshine for London on deadline day, accepting a season-long loan offer from Chelsea.

He is now on a 12-month trial, with the reward of a long-term place at Stamford Bridge on the line.

At the end of the midfielder’s current deal, Chelsea could exercise their right to acquire his services from Atletico Madrid for £30m (Evening Standard).

Depending on how Saul gets on, this could be a bargain by all accounts.

Relatively speaking, that’s a small fee for such a talented player.

An experienced campaigner at the highest tier of European football, the 26-year-old knows how to compete alongside and against the best.

His CV isn’t too shabby either; twice a Europa League winner and current La Liga Champion, with a couple of Spanish cups thrown in for good measure.

“He’s just another excellent player,” said Gary Neville.

But this will mean little if Saul fails to stamp his mark at Chelsea.
Extra options

There’s no question opportunities are on the horizon for the man from Madrid.

Tuchel’s midfield is already under strain because of the injury to N’Golo Kante. Jorginho turns 30 in December, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley have hardly staked a serious claim to be seen as regulars.

Keeping Saul on board beyond his loan could be a wise move, for the present and future.
