Roma open talks with West Ham over star player loan

Sources have confirmed to 90min that Roma has initiated negotiations with West Ham regarding a potential transfer for Italian international striker Gianluca Scamacca. The injury to their first-choice striker Tammy Abraham, who suffered an ACL injury in the final game of the 2022/23 Serie A season, has prompted Roma to search for attacking reinforcements this summer. Scamacca has emerged as a target for the club in their pursuit of new options up front.

According to 90min, Roma has held discussions with West Ham regarding a possible deal for Scamacca, and their sporting director Tiago Pinto is scheduled to travel to London later this week to finalize the talks. Scamacca, who joined West Ham in a £35m transfer from Sassuolo last summer, has struggled to find form and has been hampered by injuries, resulting in limited playing time with just 11 Premier League starts and three league goals. Sources have indicated to 90min that Scamacca is open to the idea of returning to Italy and his hometown of Rome, where he previously played for Roma’s youth team.

While West Ham acknowledges the possibility of initially loaning Scamacca, they aim to include a significant option to purchase the player in any potential deal. Roma’s pursuit of Scamacca follows their recent signings of Houssem Aouar on a free transfer from Lyon and Evan Ndicka, a defender from Eintracht Frankfurt. Aouar’s arrival was announced last week, and Ndicka is currently undergoing a medical examination in Rome ahead of signing a five-year contract with the club.
