Stephen Kelly has told Sky Sports News (Friday, 10.25AM) that he believes Antonio Conte is a better appointment for Tottenham than Mauricio Pochettino. The Italian is on the verge of becoming Spurs manager according to reports, though Pochettino could also return to Spurs.
Conte, 51, is set to replace Jose Mourinho – finally replacing Mourinho. Conte exited Inter Milan days after winning the Scudetto with Inter Milan – pipping Juventus to a tenth successive title. His shock Inter exit is set to see Spurs swing into action, and lure him to London.
Football London’s Alasdair Gold says Conte is now set to get the job. Pochettino was linked with a return to Spurs, and some reports even suggested he had asked PSG to let him leave. He has endured a difficult six months at the club he played for – losing the Ligue 1 title.
Ex-Tottenham defender Kelly believes Conte is a better appointment than Pochettino, because Conte has a better track record with trophies. He thinks Conte is the right choice over Pochettino, as it is a step forward.
“I think it will probably be healthier to go in a new direction. You’re bringing in someone who has won the Premier League before, something they’re striving to do. Conte set Juventus off on a winning path, and then break that with Inter,” Kelly told Sky Sports News.
“For what he has done this season was really impressive. You are bringing in a manager that knows how to win things. He is a more-forward thinking manager when it comes to winning things. Pochettino has been brilliant, but Conte would be amazing.”
Kelly is bang on, Conte is a better option than Pochettino for Tottenham
Let’s get it right, both managers would be brilliant appointments for Tottenham. But Pochettino has been here and needs to go and experience life outside of Tottenham for a few years. Yes, he will probably return to Spurs in the future – but he needs more of a break from Spurs initially.
He has been away for 18 months. Things went stale under Pochettino last time – and having such a short time in between means things could go stale again, quickly. Conte is a new project, an exciting one, one with a manager at the peak of his powers. Conte is a better appointment than Pochettino.
