Spurs boss Jose Mourinho ‘phones Luka Modric’ as he lines up blockbuster transfer

Jose Mourinho has phoned Luka Modric about a sensational return to Tottenham, according to reports in Spain. The midfielder spent four years in north London before joining up with the Special One at Real Madrid, where he has won four Champions League trophies in a glistening eight-year spell at the Santiago Bernabeu.

As Express argues, Modric will go down in history as one of the greatest midfielders in Real Madrid’s history but the move simply wasn’t possible without the influence of Mourinho.

The 35-year-old labelled talks between the two clubs in 2008 as “torture” after refusing to travel on Spurs’ pre-season tour following a transfer request.

Stubborn negotiator Daniel Levy was desperate to keep hold of Modric but finally caved in following the intervention of his current manager Mourinho.

“Mourinho played a vital role; he was determined to bring me to Real, insisting on the transfer even when the Real officials lost their patience with Levy,” Modric revealed in his Autobiography.

“Mourinho himself called the Tottenham chairman and tried to persuade him to accept the offer, ‘otherwise Real could back out of it.”‘

Now Mourinho is vying to win trophies with Spurs and according to Spanish outlet El Chiringuito TV, the Portuguese has phoned Modric to discuss a potential return to Tottenham.

The Croatian’s current deal with Real Madrid is due to expire at the end for the season meaning he will be free to speak with other clubs from January.

Now it looks like Mourinho has made an early move to bring him back to White Hart Lane as part of his quest for silverware in north London.

Modric has already issued his approval of his former manager at Tottenham, claiming he is the right coach to bring the club trophies.

“I have a special affection for him, for everything he meant for me. Tottenham did a great thing to appoint him as a manager because he is a proven winner,” Modric told The Times.

“In Italy, England and Spain he won things and he knows how to win and I am hoping he manages to do the same thing with Spurs.

“It’s a great thing for Tottenham to be able to bring in someone like him.

“He wins everywhere. Even when people say, ‘Ah, he didn’t win in Manchester [United]’. He won the Europa League and other cups [League Cup in the 2016-17 season] because of his quality.

“He knows how to transport his energy to the players. If I had to say one thing [that he does differently to other managers] it is how he prepares for games.

“It’s something unbelievable, he gives you everything you need to know about the teams, where to make damage and exploit them.”
