TalkSPORT pundit moots 49y/o for Everton job, he’s admired by club and players

Rafa Benitez is under a lot of pressure at Everton, and Tony Cascarino believes Duncan Ferguson could be his perfect replacement if they need a new boss.

The 49-year-old has been an assistant to the last four managers at Goodison Park, taking charge on an interim basis before Carlo Ancelotti took charge, and the talkSPORT pundit has tipped him for the job while discussing the Spaniard’s future on air.

The Toffees have lost six of their last eight games, managing to draw the remaining two, and a lot of the fans are already calling for Benitez’s head with relegation staring at them in the face.

Cascarino said (as shown on their official Twitter account): “I’m a bit like what most people have been saying about Rafa. I don’t think he’s a good fit at all. Not because he’s not a good manager, it’s more to do with something just don’t feel right.

“Duncan handed the club on a short-term basis brilliantly. Everton’s style when he was in charge, he changed it in literally days to play in a more effective way that suited the players and got a couple of big results for Everton, and it was done with Duncan Ferguson at the helm.

“He’s being an assistant. Could he step up? Duncan has done really really well, and he’s very appreciated by the squad and people at the football club.”

Ferguson has been with the Toffees’ first-team coaching staff since 2014, and he surely has the experience to take charge of such a team on a permanent basis if given a chance.

Back in December 2019, he led Everton to a 3-1 win over Chelsea in his first game in charge to lift the side out of the relegation zone.

He is popular with the fans, players and board, but whether Farhad Moshiri will be open to having him as his side’s manager remains to be seen.

Big Dunc could take charge on an interim basis if Benitez is sacked before the campaign ends, and that could be his best chance of getting the job permanently.

If Everton are not able to get in an immediate replacement and decide to wait till the end of the season, he could land the job if he impresses the board.

That is a hypothesis, though, and he does not look to be in the running for the job right now.
