Thomas Tuchel explains how Chelsea will navigate December with Man City and Liverpool chasing

Thomas Tuchel has unsurprisingly admitted the next month will be “challenging” for him and his players as they navigate their way through ten games in the next month.

Chelsea’s hectic festive period of fixtures kicks off with a trip to Watford on Wednesday night before swiftly moving on to West Ham on Saturday lunchtime.

The Blues are without N’Golo Kante, Ben Chilwell and Mateo Kovacic for the game in midweek and also have doubts over Reece James, Jorginho and Timo Werner for the Watford game.

With such a tough and busy run of matches coming up for the title challengers, the manager will have to use the full depth of his impressive squad to keep up Chelsea’s Premier League winning ambitions.

A head coach who likes to use data to make informed decisions, Tuchel will no doubt lean on his coaching staff, medical department and analysts to make sure he keeps all of his available players at or near peak condition throughout the busy period.

Speaking ahead of the Watford game, Tuchel was asked about the December he has on the cards and how he is going to cope.

“It will be challenging. The good thing is it was challenging before. We don’t change our routine. We have very close and tight communication with the medical department and our fitness department and we try to predict the load.

“We look into data where the players are: who is overloaded, who is underloaded, who is chronically overloaded, who is acutely overloaded, underloaded and from there we see what we need in the next games. We do it step by step.

“If you look at the schedule too far ahead you can see this will be some tough weeks coming. That’s why focus on details and we focus on the next game and maybe the next two games where we can rely on predictions because we have fantastic support from everybody.

It is on the players now to not only be strong in the games and give everything in the games but to take recovery very seriously, very good in recovering, very good in sleeping and taking the right food and supplements so we can recover from the games because the games are intense.

“Our style of play is, hopefully, intense and needs to be intense to have a certain mentality and identity on the pitch. This is what we want and we are not scared to rotate. We have some doubts with Reece, Jorgi and Timo Werner tomorrow, we have late decisions, but we trust the full squad and it is no secret that we need a full squad to overcome weeks like this.”
