‘Unbelievable’ – Paul Merson praises one Everton player in 0-0 v Crystal Palace

After Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin returned from injury to play in the 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday, Paul Merson had nothing but praise for him, writes the GN.

Despite the Blues failing to secure a win and drop points in their quest for survival at Selhurst Park, the match is likely to be considered a positive result given they finished the game with 10 men following Mason Holgate’s red card. Calvert-Lewin, who is 26 years old, almost won the game with a fantastic display of skill, but unfortunately missed the target.

During Saturday’s match, Alex Iwobi provided a through-ball which Calvert-Lewin poked wide of Sam Johnstone’s goal. However, Merson was full of praise for the Everton striker’s ball control, which he demonstrated during the match. When asked if Calvert-Lewin appeared ready to play by Jeff Stelling on Sky Sports News, Merson responded positively, stating that “He did alright. The turn and the shot, the turn was absolutely phenomenal.”

Merson added:“Massive lump up front by Pickford and he sort of goes up for it. He doesn’t win the header but it falls down to Iwobi and he just lays him in.

“It’s an unbelievable touch but he should hit the target and he scores if he does.

“When you see that, you think no one else in the Everton team could do that. If he stays fit, they do have every chance [of staying up].”
