Craig Burley thinks Chelsea will need to be “very persuasive” to convince Bayern Munich attacker Robert Lewandowski to join them this summer, write the Chelsea Chronicle.
Lewandowski, 33, is a superstar centre-forward that’s looking to move during this transfer window. He’s confirmed he wants to leave Bayern Munich after eight brilliant years with them, scoring 344 goals in 374 appearances.
Chelsea, along with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, are the clubs linked with a potential swoop for the £329,000-a-week star.
It’s not worked out for Blues forward Romelu Lukaku on his debut season back at Stamford Bridge, which is why he’s rumoured to be leaving on loan to join Inter Milan.
ESPN pundit Burley reckons Chelsea have a tough job trying to tempt Lewandowski to West London.
“I think Chelsea are going to have to be very persuasive [to sign Lewandowski],” Burley told ESPN.
“They’ve lost [Antonio] Rudiger, who was brilliant. They’ve lost [Andreas] Christensen, who was good and bad. They obviously have an issue with Lukaku and it looks like they’re shovelling him back to Italy on loan. The players around are decent.
“If you go into Chelsea is he (Lewandowski) really going to believe Thomas Tuchel if he says ‘look, if we get you we can beat Manchester City.’ I don’t think so. I think it’s going to take more than that.
“So whether he would be convinced to go to Chelsea even with all their money and new ownership, I don’t know.”
Lewandowski is the kind of prolific goalscorer that Chelsea are crying out for.
Romelu Lukaku finished as the Blues top scorer last season with 15 goals across all competitions. Kai Havertz (14), Mason Mount (13) and Timo Werner (11) were the only other players in the squad to hit double figures.
There’s a stark contrast between the Chelsea attack and top rival clubs, but that could drastically change if they get a 50-goal striker.
