‘Very unlikely’: Journalist claims Chelsea not happy with transfer negotiation and deal is likely off

Chelsea are unlikely to continue their pursuit for Jules Kounde this summer after being unhappy with Sevilla’s increasing their demands over the centre-back, according to The Athletic journalist Simon Johnson.

Well, things have taken a turn in the last 24 hours in the 22-year-old’s transfer saga.

Kounde’s absence in Sevilla’s 1-1 draw with Elche on Saturday and Kurt Zouma’s transfer to West Ham all indicated that the deal was getting closer to being done.

Suddenly the deal has become “very unlikely” in the last 48 hours of the transfer market, The Athletic’s Johnson claims.

“It sounds like Chelsea aren’t particularly happy with the goalposts being moved,” Johnson told The Athletic’s Straight Outta Cobham podcast.

“They thought a fee had been agreed, only for Sevilla to up it by €15million (£12.9m).

“But the information that particularly David [Ornstein] got, [indicate] that this is not going to happen.

“Which is significant, because [Chelsea] have just let Zouma go, and everyone assumed that the Kounde deal was going to happen.

“Perhaps the fact that Zouma’s move to West Ham dragged on for so long has had an impact that Sevilla are worried about the options to replace [Kounde].

“Who knows, it might happen before Tuesday night, but from what we’re hearing, it’s very unlikely.”
