‘Wasn’t my fault’ – Gary Lineker fires back at Alan Shearer after blunt Everton claim

Gary Lineker, the former Everton striker, has expressed regret for not winning the league during his time at Goodison Park, relays the LiverpoolEcho.

In 1985, Lineker joined Everton from his childhood club Leicester City for a transfer fee of £800,000. He scored 40 goals in 57 appearances during the single season he played for the club, which included goals in all three Merseyside derby matches he played.

Despite his impressive performance, Lineker’s goals were insufficient to secure the league title for Everton, as they were edged out by their local rivals Liverpool in the end.

Speaking on the Match of the Day Top 10 podcast, Lineker admitted his disappointment, saying he should have won the league with Everton. When asked if he was brought in to win the league, Lineker clarified that Everton had won the title the season before and the season after he was there. Alan Shearer joked that Lineker had cost Everton the title, to which Lineker replied that it wasn’t his fault.

He said: “That’s one more than me, of any league…second I think four times, maybe.”

With Micah Richards saying in response: “Second four times?” Before Lineker replied: “Should’ve won it with Everton.”

To which Richards replied: “So wait, they brought you in to win the league?”

Linker then said: “No, they won the league the season before. And then they won the league the season after! I was only there one year.”

To which Alan Shearer then interjected and added: “I’ve never known that before. Great Gary Lineker brought in to win the title, and you cost Everton the title?” Lineker then replied: “It wasn’t my fault.”
